Mohamad Assegaf

Born in Surakarta, Mohamad Assegaf pursued his undergraduate degree in the Law Department of Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, and graduated in 1969. His first career as a lawyer was in the central office of the non-profit Legal Aid Institute (Lembaga Bantuan Hukum, or LBH) in Jakarta. It was there that his legal activities were supervised and developed by renowned lawyers in Indonesian modern history, such as Adnan Buyung Nasution, Yap Thiam Hien and HJC Princen. The cases he had to handle in LBH had educated him well about the legal situation in Indonesia, over and above invaluable training in handling a wide range of particular cases.

For more than 40 years of his career, he has been widely known mostly for his high-profile cases, including the first “computer-crime” case in Indonesia involving Bank Nasional Indonesia; defense for political activists critical to the government, as well as former Indonesian president. Yet many of his clients have also known him for low-profile cases that he earnestly takes care of. For all those cases, his main principle is simply: justice and fairness for everyone.
